the summer of 2011 I was driving around the country with the hunger artists. we were “on tour” but really we just mostly listened to the roger miller greatest hits cd on repeat and sometimes played shows at some run down punk houses. outside of little rock, arkansas, written on a curb in purple sharpie at a rest stop I read the words “boys and girls in america have such a sad time together.”

In Mexican culture it’s not rude to call someone a name based on their race, what they look like, etc. Your family will tell you when you’re getting fat, shouldn’t wear something, or look like a damn hooligan. I know most other cultures are like this but I thought I should point it out.

Something that really annoys me are all those made-for-TV movies about God coming to judge everybody that production houses associated with Trinity Broadcasting Network make. It’s always the same actors over and over again. There’s that one who played the anti-christ in the Omega Code playing the new mastermind bad guy. The one kid who started in the 90s playing the teenager in high school talking to his friends about Jesus. Over and over, always in rearranged versions of the same basic movie. I grew up watching TBN because I was raised on and off “in the church.” The times I wasn’t going to church were when things really hit the shitter and people were doing too many drugs or we just couldn’t pay for the gas to get to church and back. Stupid things like that. Anyway, these days it looks like all those church-y production companies like to make movies direct for Netflix. Which is fine, more power to freedom of speech, yadda yadda, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to keep mum about the ridiculous things I see in said movies.

Yesterday there was a movie about the rapture. The mainstream church goes back and forth about how/when/if the rapture will occur. Most of them are sissies and like to think that the Lord will sweep all the believers up into the sky just before things get really bad (a.k.a. the Tribulation) thus saving them all the trouble. Speaking from a theological perspective I believe this viewpoint is highly suspect and probably politically motivated. After all, how are the pastors of the feel-good-about-yourself centers supposed to make money from their congregations if they’re telling them they might have to deal with some tough stuff before the second coming of Christ? Anyway, let’s get back to the movie about the rapture. It was basically one of those shrouded police/crime action flicks except tailored for a generic Christian audience. You know, vanilla theology/Hollywood Christianity, nothing too controversial. At some point one or more of the main characters will convert another main character or be converted or not be converted and regret it. (Because they then must suffer the Tribulation.) The main bad guys were some Iranian terrorists (of course) who were fixing to set some nuclear bombs off. Yep.

It’s all just so frustrating for me because for the longest time I was raised in the line of thinking. The thing that bothered me the most about church was that I never fit in because I actually read the bible and the other kids didn’t, they just liked having their little church cliques. If you’re wondering, yeah, I’m a little bitter about that, but really it’s nothing new because maybe that’s the fate of artistic types. These days seeing those faux blockbuster church flicks is an interesting throwback to all those beliefs I used to hold because I was unable to see the hypocrisy, ignorance, and plain wrongness of a lot of the beliefs I had marinated in for so long. That being said, there are many good aspects of church, reading the actual bible and not just the stuff spewed from billboards, and the many decent people who really want to effect positive change in the world. Critically analyzing and being a pain in the ass of the authorities is a genuine responsibility, however, and perhaps that’s what this is. All those low-budget-ish movies are highly suspect and saddening and maddening for me. Perhaps this is just a tirade or maybe you can relate, ye of post or soon-to-be post-Hollywood Christianity-dom.
